A Divine Night of Celebration: Janmashtami 2023 at BGIS

Published On: 2023-09-12

Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, is a radiant festival that graces the land of Braj with unmatched splendor. At Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (BGIS), this occasion is nothing short of a grand spectacle, where preparations begin weeks in advance, both internally and externally.

Externally, every department, from maintenance to the kitchen, decoration to hospitality, buzzes with activity, preparing ardently for the grandest day of the year. Internally, hearts and minds are tuned to welcome the Lord. Students and teachers chant extra rounds of Lord's names, immerse themselves in hearing the pastimes of Krishna, and delve into books like the 'Krishna Book.' Dean Radhakant Prabhu ji, in a heartfelt address during the school assembly, ignited the flame of devotion in every heart, inspiring all to prepare a consciousness worthy of the Lord's presence.

This year, the grand Janmashtami event unfolded on September 7th, transforming the entire campus into a resplendent bride. The temple hall, packed to the brim with guests, teachers, students, and community members, radiated energy and devotion during the early morning Mangal Arti. Enthusiastic dance and kirtan reverberated throughout the temple. Post-Mangal Arti, students and teachers divided into various groups, each with their own service: crafting garlands, maintaining cleanliness, cooking the 56 bhoga offerings, or chanting rounds in Krishna Sudhama Hall. Middle school students even chanted 64 rounds of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, led by Karunakar Prabhu and other dedicated teachers.

After a brief afternoon rest, everyone geared up for the eagerly anticipated evening. Children donned their finest festival attire, filling Krishna Sudama Hall with their beaming faces. Excitement filled the air. The festivities commenced with soul-stirring kirtan and Bhajan singing by primary graders, followed by middle school boys. Distinguished guests Vrindavan Chandra Swami Maharaj and Padmanabh Swami Maharaj graced the occasion, imparting profound insights on the consciousness one should embrace on Janmashtami. It was a deeply Krishna-conscious start to the grand night.

The tiny tots from primary grades dazzled everyone with their dance performances, captivating the audience with their innocent expressions. The girls from Braj Gopika School delivered mesmerizing dance and Bhajan singing performances, leaving the audience awestruck. Their precision and hard work lit up the stage, inciting the entire hall to dance and sing along. Thunderous applause followed each performance. Skits were another highlight, with the grade 10 boys presenting a Sanskrit skit that left everyone in admiration. The teachers' Drama on Srila Prabhupada's life stole the show, captivating the children and prompting boisterous cheers.

Between performances, Nimai Sundar Prabhu and Brijraj Prabhu engaged the children in an interactive and instructive Krishna quiz, holding the attention of all guests, teachers, and students alike. Following the performances, everyone proceeded to the temple for the deities' abhishekam, which was live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube. After offering the abhishekam, devotees returned to Krishna Sudama Hall to enjoy the final drama of the night performed by senior school boys, a performance that was met with much appreciation and applause.

The grand Janmashtami celebration culminated with a breathtaking fireworks display at midnight, painting the night sky with vibrant colors. A special Aarti at the temple, followed by an enthusiastic kirtan involving all present, added to the festive fervor. Finally, after hours of fasting, a sumptuous feast was served, creating a heavenly experience.

Janmashtami 2023 will be remembered as a night of dance, drama, music, and vibrant community celebrations, leaving lasting impressions and warm memories in the hearts of all who attended.
